是一种分子发动机，以肌动蛋白丝作为运行的轨道。实际上，肌球蛋白也是ATPase，通过ATP的水解导致构型的变化从而在肌动蛋白丝上移动。这种ATPase同微管分子发动机一样，能够将化学能转变成机械能，所以又被称为机械化学酶（mechanochemival enzyme），或叫发动机蛋白（motor protein）。至今所研究的肌球蛋白在微丝上的移动方向都是从（-）端移向（+）端，而ATP是发动机蛋白运动的能源。
